First off, cue the comments about the quality of these images, this was before I learned how to edit haha.
Let’s talk about Lipstick. Funny thing, what comes to mind for most girls isn’t the same for me. My lipstick memory isn’t watching my mom get ready in the morning and choosing a lipstick color. It isn’t going through my moms lipstick drawer and choosing one to play dress up with. It’s my 5 year old daughter, getting into my MAC lipstick, and using the carpet/walls/mirrors/her body as her canvas. It’s my other daughter at that age, who actually used lipstick correctly, just not at the right time. This resulted in many facebook comments about her lipstick being too dark and what was I thinking letting her wear that to her 1st grade Christmas Program!! I mean, I guess I was just picking my battles!!
This is when I ditched HALF my collection and settled for my top 8(ish). My collection has never been the same, not just because of that but ALSO being that I never realized how harmful lipstick can be for us until this past year. Back in the day….ancient times if you will, lipsticks, lip glosses, lip liners etc were made from natural materials such as; red berries, gemstones, or dyes extracted from different plants and flowers. It wasn’t until the 19th century that these beauty products became available as a man-made commodity, beautifully packaged for use by the modern woman and composed of mostly wax and artificial coloring.
Many name brand lipsticks contain lead, a proven neurotoxin that accumulates in the body because the body does not exhibit chemical processes necessary to break down and assimilate any amounts of lead. These high levels of lead have been correlated to miscarriages, infertility and cognitive issues. SAY WHAT?! I am sure you’ve all heard the statistic before — women eat 7 pounds of lipstick during the course of their lives, or 4, or 6??? Let’s be honest TBH, I have no idea if this is true or not, but I do know that whatever products we put on our lips are going to end up inside of our bodies either through absorption or digestion.
When I think of it this way, I want to make sure what I put on my lips isn’t harmful. I want to make sure the gloss my girls play with isn’t made with heavy metals and sketchy chemicals.
1938, yes, your eyes are reading this correctly, 1938 was the last time congress passed a law regulating the cosmetic industry. So, it’s up to us to know what is in our products and it is up to us to use SAFER products! I truly believe no other company out there is making as much effort to make sure its products are not only safer but also high performing like Beautycounter. They are made with quality ingredients which are sourced properly and fully disclosed, are batch tested 3X during production for heavy metal contamination, and use vanilla planifolia fruit extract and natural peppermint extract in place of sketchy fragrances.
Let’s all be more kind to our lips and our bodies!!
